5 Skincare Routine Tweaks for Hot Summer Days
With summer in full swing, is your skincare regimen ready the hot summer days? These quick and simple tips from our New Orleans cosmetic specialist can help ensure your skin looks and feels great even as the weather warms.
Protect Your Skin
For many of us, long summer days mean that most of our free time with be spent outdoors enjoying the sunshine and balmy conditions. While this can certainly be great for our social calendars, long periods of time spent outside in the sun can have adverse effects of skin. In addition to accelerating the aging process and increase skin cell damage, lengthy exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can also increase a person’s risk of developing skin cancer.
To prevent these long-term consequences of summer sun damage, we first and foremost recommend that patients regularly use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. If you plan on staying outside for more than a few hours, be sure to reapply once every two hours. If you’re sweating or getting wet, reapply more frequently. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can help keep the sun’s rays off vulnerable parts of your face.
Focus on Hydration, not Moisturization
There’s a difference between keeping skin hydrated and keeping skin moisturized. During the winter, dermatologists often recommend that patients add more products to seal in moisture and prevent skin cells from shriveling in the cold. In contrast, summer heat means water is more likely to evaporate out of skin cells as sweat. This dehydrates skin cells and can cause fine lines and wrinkles to appear more pronounced. As the summer months continue, switch from oil-heavy moisturizers to lightweight water-based products and keep skin hydrated throughout the day with a rejuvenating mist.
Reevaluate Cleansing Process
When was the last time you looked at your cleansing routine? If the answer is over three months ago, it’s time to revisit the cleanser aisle. As the weather gets warmer, skin is more likely to increase oil and sweat production. Removing dirt and grime with a gentle cleanser that rehydrates without drying out skin can help ensure your face stays free of blemishes throughout the summer.
Exfoliate Often – But Not Too Often
As with cleansers, summertime exfoliants are best when used gently. Exfoliating skin more than twice in a week can dry out skin and trigger excess oil and sebum production. To keep your skin looking supple rather than oily, stick to a once-weekly exfoliant.
Stick with Lightweight
When it comes to summertime skin products, less it more. Serums and light, water-based moisturizers can help skin retain a healthy-looking glow without feeling heavy or suffocating skin cells. Cooling moisturizers made with aloe can also be a cooling relief after a long day outside and can help rehydrate dried out parts of the face, hands, and neck.
