Is Fat Your New Best Friend?
We have heard it before, with age comes volume loss. Any clinician, aesthetician, dermatologist or plastic surgeon will tell you this. When we reach the age of 40 (younger for some), most of us experience the initial stages of sagging skin and aging wrinkles. Fortunately, there are aesthetic procedures which can resolve these aging effects quickly. Some last a few months, others last longer. The trick is to know which one is best for you.
There are Many Choices
Dermal fillers like Juvéderm®, Radiesse®, and Restylane® can boost up the lost volume and diminish fine lines and wrinkles effectively, yet temporarily. These products are great options; but for those who want a longer lasting option, fat transfer may be a better solution. Many of our New Orleans patients are not interested in having a major surgical procedure and opt instead for minimally invasive procedures to maintain a youthful facial appearance.
One Solution for Multiple Areas
Are you looking for more volume in your cheeks, lips, or under the eyes? Does your skin sag around the nose and mouth? While many patients fix these signs of aging with dermal fillers, more and more patients are electing to use their own fat as a natural filler through a process called fat transfer. There are several benefits to this procedure including no risk of allergic reactions, longer lasting results, and no synthetic substances.
The concept of transferring fat to your face is simple, board-certified Dr. Lisa Donofrio takes fat from one area of your body and injects it into facial areas which need additional volume for wrinkle reduction and skin support.
She uses liposuction to extract fat from donor sites like the abdomen, buttocks or thighs, then purifies the fat in a centrifuge or filtration device and injects the extracted fat into the target facial area. The results are a full, youthful facial appearance with little recovery or risk.
There is no better lip filler than a patient’s body fat. While synthetic fillers are effective and provide beautiful results, they are temporary, and injections are necessary every few months.
Although facial fat transfers have a bad rap for not lasting long, this is not true. Surviving fat to the target area will remain there permanently, making this procedure a suitable option for many of our patients.
How Do Fat Injections Compare to Fillers Like Juvéderm®?
Compared to injectables like Juvéderm®, the fat transfer procedure is more involved because the fat must be harvested from other body parts using liposuction. However, unlike injectables, a fat transfer uses more volume to fill larger voids. And, fat injections are a natural enhancement, containing a small population of regenerating adipose stem cells.
