The Latest in Lip Augmentation: Fat Transfer
A defined cupid’s bow and beautifully plump lips have long been considered important aesthetic goals for many women. While some may be blessed from birth with well-shaped lips, some patients turn to the ever-growing list of dermal fillers to add more volume. Among the more traditional filler options, a fat transfer has been the newest option has emerged with great results.
The Current Standard
When it comes to lip augmentation, many patients are familiar with traditional dermal fillers like Juvéderm®, Restylane®, and Belotero. These options create volume by relying on hyaluronic acid, a naturally derived substance that temporarily stimulates collagen production. While these solutions are incredibly popular, they come with some limitations. For starters, most of these treatments are temporary – while they add substantial volume at the initial injection, these results fade within several months. As the treatments don’t add permanent volume to lips, patients will continually face collagen depletion in their lips.
Fat Transfer – A New Approach to an Old Concern
Just as the name implies, fat transfer takes a small amount of fat from the abdomen or thigh then reinjects into the target areas. As with other lip augmentation options, fat transfer is an excellent solution for discreetly increasing lip volume while shrinking the appearance of age-caused wrinkles on and around the lips. However, as fat transfer uses your own fat cells rather than synthetic filler, there are some important advantages patients gain with this method of lip augmentation.
Natural Filler Option
While traditional dermal fillers are made from a naturally-produced substance, not everyone feels comfortable getting injections. For women concerned about the use of fillers or anxious about the possibility of having foreign material inserted into their skin, fat transfer for lip augmentation is a perfect alternative. As the material used comes from your own body, the procedure is completely natural. For women with skin sensitivities, fat transfer reduces the risk of flare-ups or allergic reaction, making lip augmentation an option for achieving long-desired luscious lips.
Targeted Treatment
Creating beautifully full lips all comes down to application. While some may prefer a dramatic pout, others may be looking for a more discreet solution for increasing lip volume without looking cartoonish. As fat transfer helps fill in space rather than totally sculpting and changing the shape of lips, this method helps ensure your results look as natural as possible.
Permanent Results
While traditional dermal fillers like Juvéderm® and Restylane® provide immediate results, the formula used to fill lips is temporary. Often, results of lip augmentation with traditional fillers last anywhere from 3 to 6 months, requiring regular retreatment if you want to maintain your results. As fat cells are transferred to the deficient area, lip augmentation by fat transfer is considered a long-lasting treatment. While longevity varies from patient to patient, most find that results can last for years to come.
